Ethnographic Textile Preservation and Access

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT

The Division of Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) requests $950,520 from the National Endowment for the Humanities for the preservation and access of the Museum’s unique collection of 10,470 ethnographic textiles from the Americas, the Pacific Islands, Asia, Europe, and Africa. This two-year project involves the transfer of the textiles to retrofitted and new cabinetry and trays, and the acquisition of digital images. By properly storing this fragile collection, its preservation will be ensured, and by creating a digital image archive, its accessibility to AMNH staff, descendant communities, researchers, and the general public will be dramatically increased.

The 10,470 textiles are an integral part of the AMNH’s ethnographic collection, which altogether consists of 188,000 objects. This collection was assembled during expeditions conducted from the 1870s to the present by some of the most distinguished names in the field of anthropology. The value of the textile collection, which is exceptional for its size, comprehensiveness, and documentation, lies in the fact that it was systematically assembled by men and women who had a great understanding of the cultures they were investigating. They knew exactly what to collect and document in order to accurately represent a people’s material culture. As a result, parts of the collection are uniquely important because they often date back to the mid-19th century and represent pre-industrial procurement methods and production techniques.

The textile collection has benefited the public and has served the goals of the humanities and the sciences in the form of exhibitions and publications both academic and popular. Twenty-first-century anthropologists continue to add to the pioneering publications of the 19th-century founders and 20th century luminaries of anthropology. Textiles are an important feature of permanent and temporary AMNH exhibitions, and are frequently loaned for display to museums in this country and abroad. The number of visiting researchers, loan requests, and publications are a testament to the importance of the textile collection. With the acquisition of digital images, access will become a reality for an enormously increased audience, who will be able to view the collection and study its associated documentation via the World Wide Web.

The Division of Anthropology has always accommodated textile research requests insofar as possible, given current inadequate storage conditions and access parameters. Currently, the 10,470 textiles are improperly stored in overcrowded wood trays, and retrieval is difficult and damaging. The textiles are folded and layered inside the trays, which are finished with a variety of harmful varnishes. A survey has been made of the collection to determine which textiles need to be stored flat and which can be rolled.

La división de antropología ha acomodado siempre peticiones de la investigación de la materia textil en cuanto es posible, dado condiciones de almacenaje y parámetros inadecuados actuales del acceso. Actualmente, las 10.470 materias textiles se almacenan incorrectamente en bandejas de madera atestadas, y la recuperación es difícil y perjudicial. Las materias textiles se doblan y se acodan dentro de las bandejas, que se acaban con una variedad de barnices dañosos. National Endowment for the Humanities funding is requested to purchase additional cabinetry, metal trays, and other fittings so that all 10,470 of the textiles can be stored as specified by the survey, and 9,100 of the textiles can be digitally imaged (1,370 African textiles have already been imaged). This project is a continuation of the AMNH’s overall initiative, which has received major support from the NEH, to preserve its anthropological collections while simultaneously increasing their accessibility.
